I am a fan of G.A. Henty and have read and listened to many of his stories. I love how he bring history to life. This is my favorite of his book. I love the time period (Norman conquest) and the actual historical details. I also like that he does not ignore fashion of the day and spends some time describing what people wore in pretty good detail (maybe 12 year old boys don't like this?). OK, the language is old-fashioned, but this is a ripping good yarn there are shipwrecks, escapes, warfare, a castle seige, spying, and intrigue. Good characters, though Wulf himself is a bit too good to be true. Still, lots of fun to read. All Henty's novels are free, give one a try.
Great adventure, manly characters, intriguing plot and HISTORY!!!
I learned more about early English history than I knew before. I knew of the Battle of Hastings, but I did not know specific background. I like the moral attitudes of the young people around whom Henty builds his stories, and this was no exception. I was surprised to find out the warlike actions of the various English tribes against one another, as well as the influence, antagonism, and attacks by foreign countries. Since I have always loved history, this book is right down my alley.
I enjoyed the story, but found it slow reading at times. It seems that the writer belabored some points and had a habit of going into too much detail, which slowed the story down. It could have done with a good, contemporary editor to make the book flow more smoothly. If it had that, I would have rated it higher just based on the story. Having said all that, I did like the book.
It's a bit dense but it is not hard to read, the cast of characters is not overwhelming and its historicity lends it a greater weight.
Excellent historical fiction. Written for adults, but now considered for juveniles. This undoubtedly due to the lack of sex or gratuitous "blood and guts".
Wulf the Saxon has it all! For those who like adventure stories, G.A. Henty is at
the top. Henty was a first rate historian, and wove his characters into the TRUE
histories of many lands and ages. These books were written for younger readers (teens)...I, being in my mid sixties, remember when people read these books, and others like them, to turn boring, dry old history into a rousing tale of epic adventure. I couldn't stop reading it. My eyes were tired, yet it was hard to stop reading it because it was so exciting! I want a hard copy of this one for my grandchildren...One GREAT book. This free book thing is really great! It makes you want to hold the book in your hand...A good way to sell books. I want a bookcase full of these books. I bet I can find them here on . Thank you for making this literature available to all...
