Leonard Mutch has just discovered his wife was lying to him for years – but can he bear to uncover the truth?

Leonard and Rose Mutch were happily married for forty years. But after her sudden death, Leonard is shocked to find a train ticket in her handbag to a town Rose had never visited. Then a letter arrives from a childhood friend of Rose’s, hinting at a past she never told him about.

Reluctantly embarking on an investigation into the life of the woman he thought he knew as well as himself, Leonard is faced with questions that threaten to destroy his happy memories. Why did Rose secretly leave work every Tuesday? Why did she tell lies about her family? And why is their daughter so desperate for him to stop digging into the past?

As his whole life threatens to unravel, Leonard must make an impossible choice – between his memories and a truth he could never have imagined…

From the bestselling author of The Most Beautiful Thing, Small Kindnesses is a gripping and ultimately life-affirming novel that explores the power of secrets and the healing qualities of love.

The story develops as we learn with Leonard from the emergence of a shiny blue purse 3 years after his wife's death, that there is a secret of immense depth which alters his life. Intended or not, surely there is irony in that Leonard, a devoted gardener by trade and avocation, has had a wife named Rose and a new friend through a quirk of fate, Lily. Through the introduction of Lily who was a childhood friend of Rose and initiates an acquaintance with the widower, Leonard learns of a secret held by his wife that blights his life and that of their only daughter. This reaches out like a hydra to coil around the daughter's marriage as well. The secret had been known to her in a corrupted form. Not until it is discovered after a lengthy search, are the father and daughter freed to love each other again and understand their wife/mother. Rose's ultimately unsuccessful attempt to conceal something very important is resolved through the tender tenaciousness of Lily and the sweetness of Leonard, both of whom are caring people whose kindness does echo and embrace all those near and dear to them. A lovely read.

Small Kindnesses is a slow moving but charming story about a man moving forward after the death of his beloved wife. He thought he knew her well until a chance discovery opens the door to a sad past that he was never aware of. His quest to find out things he is not sure he wants to know is made interesting by the musings in his head and the little side stories about things he reads and imagines. I smiled often while reading. The writing is beautiful and you come to love Leonard very early in the book. The pace is slow to a sad ending to the story of the wife Rose and the glimmer of a new and hopeful life ahead for Leonard. This is a book for a rainy day.
You know it is a great book when you think about it off and on for awhile. Pieces of the story and phases. Really good book that leaves you thinking and understanding.

This is a wonderful summer read, more so if you are outside in your garden. A well written book with a pleasant pace and rhythm to match our main character. This author lays out in a gentle manner the good and evil in life. This is defiantly a summer read as the main character is into plants and gardens.....do not fear the author does not overwhelm us with all the Latin names etc. Wonderful subtle reminders that life is short. Highly recommend this book it is well worth your time.
I recommend this book to readers of romance and mystery. The way emotional turmoil is captured through the character’s inner dialogue is a display of skillful writing. The characters are refreshingly imperfect.
I came across this book and its author quite unexpectedly, in a link on a friend's Facebook page. I had never heard of either the author or the title, but as it happened, the day I stumbled across the link was the day that the book Small Kindnesses was offered as a free download. I had just finished another book and decided, on a whim, to download it. I am so very glad that I did! I have downloaded a few freebie books previously and been mostly disappointed, but not this time.

The characters were multilayered, real, and likable, and the story itself unfolded in such a way that it both foreshadowed what might be coming plot-wise AND still held its surprises until the end. I also loved the setting and the colloquialisms--have always been a huge fan of good fiction set in the UK and/or written by UK writers. Being a natural history buff myself, I especially loved that the main character was a gardener and so much of his plant knowledge was woven into the story.

As much as I enjoyed the setting, the characters, and the language, it was the emotional realism of the story itself that really won me over. The book's portrayal of a man coming to terms with grief, in his own beautifully imperfect, idiosyncratic, and utterly human way, rang true in a way that I've not often seen. It takes skill to render that kind of emotion in a story without lapsing into the maudlin, and Fiona Robyn does it with grace and compassion and humor. This story unfurled into rich, mature bloom, just like the flowers in the main character's gardens.

I'm now thoroughly hooked on Ms. Robyn's writing and can't wait for more!
Maybe it's just me but the (British) men (and most of the women) in this story were pretty much all wimps. Very emotional with lots of outbursts and tears. Though, I did like the main character, Leonard. He had the most reason for falling apart because his wife of 40 years died suddenly. And the author had a serious affection for plants, even the main characters were named Rose, Lily and Iris. Way too many descriptions of plants, etc. The story did keep my attention and I really wanted to find out what the big secret was in the end and that part was pretty sad (and shocking). Even though I kind of figured it out. I think I would recommend this book because the main character was a sweet guy that really tried to be a good person throughout the book.
Leonard's wife Rose kept some secrets from her husband during her entire marriage and took them with her to the grave. Leonard is none the wiser until 3 years after his wife's death when he finds a train ticket with a destination never mentioned by Rose. When Lila, a childhood friend of Rose's, calls, a friendship develops and together, Lila and Leonard embark on a journey to uncover the mysteries of Rose's past and her secrets. Leonard is afraid his memories of a happy marriage will be severely impacted in finding out what his wife was hiding from him all those years. Not only did Rose have secrets, but Leonard comes to find out that Lila and Raine, Leonard's daughter, have secrets of their own.

The book was very well written and engrossing. It took a couple chapters for me to get into the story, but by then, I could not wait to find out what happens.
